Last week, I made two flower projects that I will soon incorporate in my fabric flower pattern collection. Aside from that, I am also creating a free hair bow tutorial (yay!) after I finish my ring pillow tutorial. I thought of making it with a birdcage veil but I think it would look more busy than flamboyant.

I'm naming this flower Pretty Pleats.

For this flabric flower, maybe I'll name her Bianca Rose.

I noticed one of the toys given to me by my aunt from the States when I was still a baby. I named her Tala which means "star" in Filipino. I made my fabric flowers into Baby Tala's headbands and I think Baby Tala was happy to wear the fabric flowers.

Bead Embroidery Embellishment

I made this bead embroidery a few months ago. I used these ornate premade patterns seamstress usually use to decorate the cape of the Infant Jesus or the cape of Mother Mary. I used some seed beads, rhinestones, and pastel pink glass pearls. It actually took me the whole day to finish this. I might try making patterns for bead embroidery in the future. :)

I'm still conceptualizing my next set of craft tutorials for this blog.

One of my goals in creating this blog is to help entrepreneurs by providing product ideas for their craft businesses. I did not design today. I just took pictures of my designs on different angles in 2 different backgrounds. I took pictures of 18 flower hair accessories. I'll change everything I'm pretty exhausted but I was happy with the results! I get to use fresh cut flowers from our garden. The lighting cooperated well... I didn't use much curving from Gimp since the colors were accurate on the first take. Yay!

Yesterday, I designed some business card, banner, and avatar for my next shop, Lucia Manila. I am quite pleased with the result. I used this miniature bench I got from the Heritage Village of Vigan, Ilocos Sur. I'm really in love with the details of this wooden bench set. The textured background is something I accidentally found when dad gave me the toaster box to help me organize my supplies. I found it in the contents and liked the color of it as it complements the little bench that I've been wanting to take pictures of but found no flattering background for it. I'm glad I found that corrugated cardboard....Yay for recycling! I'll be using that as the background for my bridal garters.

This reminded me about the Alchemist Book by Paulo Coelho especially the part when Santiago was cleaning all the crystals in the shop and people started noticing all the beautiful crystals in the merchant's shop. It was a painstaking task, but in the end I know it's worth the hard work.

Yesterday, after meeting with my lovely clients, I went to Divisoria in Manila to buy my supplies. I haven't been to Divisoria for months now. When I got there, it was so crowded and hot. It is overwhelming if you're new to the place. I'm quite used to the chaos Manila has. I was able to buy yards and yards of tulle and other fabrics! I was so happy. I also found other supplies that I have been looking for forever.

I'm Finally on ETSY!

After months of taking a sabbatical from designing, I'm finally on Etsy. Today was second attempt to post on Etsy. The first one was from my previous account. I switched my account to Jewelboxballerina since it is more searchable than my personal name. Gimp was really nice to me. Photoshop overwhelms me. At Gimp, I only use the crop, rotate, and the curve to edit my photos. I want to fully utilize Gimp...maybe I'll study the program during my free time... if I ever have one. Lol!

I've been studying Etsy for months...on how to take photos, how to crop them, how to tag, how to set up shop or create descriptions, etc. I'm happy that I finally took the first steps. Honestly, I was intimidated and somewhat overwhelmed.... but all I needed was to just create my first listing...then the rest would be easier. I actually had fun with the process especially with thinking about tags. I'm sure my shop would need a lot of improvements. I'll just improve it along the way. It's better to start now than wait for things to get perfect...otherwise, I won't be able to accomplish things.

Flores de Mayo: Toddlers and Tiaras

It's already the start of the rainy season here in the tropics. Though I'm in love with the sun, I welcomed the coming of the rain. I spent my last days of summer helping our parish's annual Sta. Cruzan. Sta. Cruzan or the Sagala is a parade commemorating Sta. Elena's finding the cross that was used for Jesus at Mt. Calvary.

This year's Reyna Elena came from our village. She's such a sweet and pretty little girl.

To be part of the parade, usually the parish would hold a fundraising through a beauty contest and the candidate with the most number of funds raised would be the Reyna Elena (Queen Ellen). She will be followed by Reyna Emperatriz, then Reyna de las Flores. There other candidates were also given titles...and our parish had 40 candidates!

This year, all the candidates were from ages five to fifteen. It was like watching Toddlers & Tiaras minus the tantrums and crazy stage mothers. During the Sagala, the local beauties would walk with ornate archs together with their escorts

Bead Organization Day

Today was my bead organization day. My work area started to look sad from all the clutter. So after my dad's and my brother's prodding, I started sorting and organizing my beads. I'm almost done and I'm excited to design again!

Yesterday, I gave some jewelry making tutorial to my nephew's nanny. She had a great time making a set of earrings and a bracelet. Since she's just going to house sit at my brother-in-law's house, she has a lot of free time to create accessories. I'm pretty excited to see what she designed the next time we meet.

Day 3 : Bracelets

Prior to my diva awakening, I used to create these simple/humble designs made up of glass beads, faux pearls, and cloistone beads. Aren't they cute?

I almost forgot...I went to Quiapo, Manila today to find my wires and crystal beads. Miraculously, I only bought what I needed. Bead shopping in Quiapo could be overwhelming to a novice jewellery designer. The place has a marvelous palette of crystal beads, glass beads, pearls, and plastic beads. Almost everything is pretty and shiny. One should learn to plan ahead on which type of colors or designs you wish to create since the place is very conducive to compulsive shopping. Going back to my bead finds, I was able to buy some amethyst crystals and sadly, some quartz crystals dyed by some sneaky business people in China (I'm currently removing the excess dye so they would be shinier too).

I made this dainty little brooch as a push present for my nephew's teacher in Australia. My sister is one of the most thoughtful people in the world. She requested that I create something for my nephew's preggy teacher and a red and black bracelet for my nephew's teacher aide. I'm glad they liked it.

I'm still star struck right now. I got an email from my favourite author, Joe Vitale thanking me for sending him a letter. Right now, I'm thinking on how I'll design a brooch for his lovely wife.

Day 12: Black and Red Necklace with Black Glass, Rubies, Garnet, Corals, and Hematite

I made this necklace as a present for my sister-in-law. This necklace is the heaviest one I made. This piece made me fall in love with rubies and garnets. The garnet seems like a black crystal but when you take a closer look at it, it is reddish in color. I don't know but I'm usually drawn to garnets these days. I already have more appreciation with rubies. Before, I associate rubies with boring fine jewelry. Now, I see a ruby on costume jewelry as a vibrant and a lively touch of red.

I had my Licensure Exam for Teachers for the whole day yesterday. That was quite a nosebleed but I'm really relieved that it's over. I can now focus more on my designs not worrying if I still have time to review.

I used a lot of pink glass in this bold cuff. Pink is my favourite colour. It's actually the color of my room. Hehe.

Day 18: Green Jade Brooch

I made this brooch as a present to one of my favourite authors. Actually, it's for his lovely wife. It would look really lovely on a plain dress or on a blazer. Mom criticized my work as heavy. Well if everything in fashion is practical, there wouldn't be stilettos.

Faithfulness in Simple Things

I prefer drama over my pieces. A while ago, I finished a simple pink bracelet for my sister's friend. I just stringed some swarovski beads and attached the necessary components to make it into a little girl's bracelet. Honestly, I got bored doing it. Since I learned about making elaborate pieces, producing a simple design can be an agonizing task for me. The only thrill I had was mixing the different hues of pink. But after peeling the layers of boredom, I became at peace and happy with the process...it reminded me that if I want to be a truly successful Jewelry Artist, I should be faithful and consistent with quality and passion even with the simplest of techniques.

I'm Liza and I design statement jewellery. The Jewel Box Ballerina Blog came from the little ballerina that twirls inside my mother's jewellery box. As a child, I love sneaking it on lazy afternoons to play with the little ballerina and my mother's jewelry in it. It was with these secret rendezvous that sparked my interest in jewelry design.

But the passion in jewelry design faded in my growing years when I started having interest in the socio-political landscape of the Philippines. I went to grade school, high school, and college thinking that I wanted to take up Law and I wanted to be the President of the Philippines. After college, I realized that my real love is not in politics but in art. It took me a while to realize that it is my true passion to make the pretty and shiny things that the little jewel box ballerina used to dance with.
